Poker :: Presto is NOT gold
  submitted on May 3, 2007, 9:53 AM

Well, I enjoyed the Mookie last night, all five minutes that I lasted. Fourth or fifth hand, I find 55 UTG+1. UTG limps in for 30, I call, and the blinds join us. Flop comes 5 8 10 rainbow. I do as I have been taught and bet 80 into the pot after it's checked around to me. UTG calls, and a second 8 drops on the turn, giving me a boat. UTG checks, and I check back. I checked for several reasons. First, the 8 brought a possible flush draw onto the board, so if he was on a draw, I would like for him to stay in the hand and hit his draw. Also, the board is pretty raggy, and I think I would be hard pressed to get much action with those cards, so I'd rather wait for the river to drop and see if my opponent can get a favorable card. Last, in addition to the flush draw, there is also some possible straight draws, QJ, J9, 67.

So, the flop brings a 9, which I looked at as a great card for me. There were several straight possibilities available, although no paint, which was disappointing. Needless to say, UTG bet 500 into a 300 pot. I thought maybe he had a set of 8s, and was overbetting for value, or maybe he smelled weakness and looked at my flop bet as a c-bet. Either way, I'm not laying down a full house, so I pushed, he called and flipped over 89o. Sick.

Looking back, I don't think I did anything really wrong in that hand. I limped in with a low pocket pair, I bet my set on the flop, I checked the harmless turn that improved my hand in the hopes of my oppenent getting some action on the river, and end up losing when my opponent hits a 4-outer. I'm all for not slow-playing your monsters, but I felt it was appropriate in this case. Plus, 89o UTG? What was that about? I don't even think you should play sooted connectors UTG, let alone crap like 89o. I mean, what are your plans with a hand like that? If someone raises, are you folding preflop? Would you call a raise out of position with a hand like that? I just don't see what the point is.

So yeah, tough beat, and I have managed to donk out of another BBT tournament out of the points. Tonight is another night, however, and hopefully I can get in the points at the Riverchasers tonight. I've fallen out of the Top 10 on the leaderboard, and I'd like to get back in.
