Sports :: First Place!
  submitted on September 10, 2007, 8:58 AM

No, this is not about the Cubs. They wouldn't know what first place looks like if it hit them upside the face. But that's a whole other headache. I wanted to post this:

Considering how the rest of this season will probably progress, I would like to spend this week enjoying the one game lead the Packers hold over the Bears.

It certainly wasn't a pretty win, but I'll take whatever I can get over a superior Eagles team. The defense looked very good all game, keeping Donovan McNabb on his toes with constant pressure, and doing a nice job of limiting the damage done by Brian Westbrook (much to the chagrin of many of my fantasy teams). Offensively, well, not quite as successful a story. The running game was awful, in part to a solid Eagles defense, an offensive line that did't provide many holes, and an inexperienced running game that couldn't get anything going. Of course this just compounded things for Favre, who was already missing his #2 wide receiver, and he had a hard time completing passes since the Eagles had made the Packers a one dimensional team for most of the game. He threw some bad passes, but had some spectacular plays as well, in particular the drive that led to GB tying the game at 13.

Major props have to go to the Eagles for completely screwing themselves with two turnovers on special teams, one leading to a return for a TD. Also, the number of stupid penalties was equally impressive.

I think I had the Packers slated to go 7-9 since they have some tough games against San Diego and Denver, as well as @ Kansas City, but an opening win against Philadelphia was a pleasant surprise, and maybe we can end up with at least a .500 record after all. It would be a heck of an accomplishment considering the lack of depth on offense.

On a quick unrelated note, nothing new to report on the poker front. I might take off this week from playing, just because I have some other things I should make time for around the house. I don't know if it will happen, but we'll see. With football back and fall TV around the corner I need to work on adjusting my schedules so I'm not completely over-indulging myself.
