Poker :: Deep in the 50/50
  submitted on August 30, 2007, 11:34 PM

(Warning: Probably long post ahead)

So I didn't dissect my deep run in the $24k, but that's probably okay, it would have been mostly filled with hands where I sucked out on people. Last night I played in the 50/50, played pretty well, and finished in 26th. I got my money all in in a good situation, just didn't work out. Just missed the final table again, but sometimes you can play well and that's just the way it goes. Alan also played last night, and also went deep, finishing in 38th, so stop by and congratulate him on overcoming his MTT donkery. We ended up at the same table a couple different times, never long enough for me to take his chips though. Oh well.

Anyways, I love the 50/50, it's probably my favorite MTT on FT (Although my results so far would indicate otherwise). I had another good run of it last night in the beginning, doing a nice job of increasing my chip stack in the first hour. After taking down a pot with a c-bet with AK, this was my first big pot:

Not much for the next several orbits, picked up some hands playing aggressive, so I'm up to 5,500 when I get my next hand:

Don't think I really would have played that one any differently. A few hands after that, I had the most ridiculous bluff work that I think I've ever pulled. The guy must have been on a busted draw or something, because I was just stunned when he folded:

I think the pivotal point in that hand was that I check-raised, but didn't push all-in. If I push there, maybe he calls with one card to go, and maybe he's ahead. Either way, I can't believe I got him to commit that much of his stack and then actually fold on the river.

Okay, so now we come to the key hand of the tournament. We're about two and a half hours in, I'm basically treading water with about 9,000 in chips. There are probably a little over 200 left, I'm hovering around 100-120. I will preface this hand by saying I decided to gamble here. I know damn well I wasn't ahead, but I took a chance knowing how big the rewards were:

(Okay, so here's the big decision. I flopped an OESD, giving me 8 outs to the nuts. On top of that, I thought about what his bet meant. He limped preflop, so I immediately ruled out JJ-AA, and probably 1010 and 99 as well. 88 or below is possible, depending on if he's a guy that would bet out his set like that. The other thing I thought was possible was a flush draw. So, taking that all into consideration, I could possibly have as many as 14 outs here. And if I take the hand down, I could nearly triple up. I felt like I was at a point in the tournament where I needed to make a move. I was doing okay, but didn't have enough chips to really make some noise. So given the odds that I had, I felt like the reward was worth the risk, so I pushed all-in, knowing I had no fold equity.)

chazzy totally tilted after that and berated me for some time afterwards about what an awful play I made, yadda yadda yadda, called me the worst player ever, and basically ignored anything I said about my outs and my odds, etc. So just to back up my decision in PokerStove, based on a card range of 1010-22, along with KQd, KJd, QJd, QTd, J9d, 98d, 87d, 76d, 65d, 54d, 43d, I am only a 47% underdog in this situation. Considering I had to call 5,000 into a pot of 10,000, I think I was absolutely justified in taking a gamble to triple up.

...now, that being said, once italianick got involved in the hand, I really just luckboxed my way into a big pot. Between the two of them, they had 4 of my outs, and also took away 3 more of my outs, knocking my equity down to 15%. Yikes. But I caught a break, turned my straight and leaped up to 28,000 in chips and third place on the leaderboard.

So, finally after three hours of play, I finally see my first premium pocket pair of the night. What do I do? With a number of shorties at my table I bust out the rarely used limp from EP:

Like I said, I really don't use that move much at all, but it really seemed like the right time for it. The guy limping right after me only helped my situation and encouraged someone to push, so I was more than happy to knock out two at once.

Lost about 8,000 a bit later when I put a guy all-in on the flop when I had TPTK and the JackAce only to get four-flushed on the river. Yuck.

Then came my second premium pair, pocket aces, which I played really well, in my opinion:

I probably could have re-raised on the river, but to be honest, I didn't expect to get any more money from him, and I was curious to see what he had. Still, I was really happy with how I played that, and I ended up taking 10,000 chips from another big stack at the table.

Okay, few more hands to talk about. First is another solid play on my part. I get excited about these, because they make me think that maybe I'm a decent poker player after all:

My heart sank when he called, and I honestly can't believe he called that with AK. He was drawing to seven outs, fortunately he didn't hit. Really liked my read there.

Here was the hand that marked the beginning of the end for me, and one of the hands I'm not thrilled with how I played. I don't know that the outcome would have been different if I had played it the way I wanted, but I was still really passive with it:

I like my call preflop, but I should have raised or folded on the flop. Obviously he's still going all in with TPTK, but trying to push him out of the hand on the turn was desperate and stupid on my part. Too bad I couldn't hit, would have been the chipleader if I win that hand with about 45 left.

Now for my busto hand. Nothing much happened between the last hand and this hand, I hovered around the middle of the pack for the most part:

So, not quite what I was hoping for. I was correct that he didn't have a hand, but he had a much stronger draw than I anticipated. I think I was correct in pushing, and he was correct in calling, considering we were literally in a coinflip situation. Tough break, I would have been back in the top 5 or so with that hand with 26 left, and a real chance to hit the final table.

I still picked up a $260 cash, which I'm pretty happy with and is always a welcome addition to my bankroll. But of course it's hard not to think about the 4 digit paydays available just a few spots down the line at the final table. Overall I'm pretty happy with how I played, and that's 2 top 30 finishes in the past week and a half. Just need to get some tips from the QOD and I should be at the final table in no time.

(Sorry for how long this is, there were just a lot of hands that I thought warranted discussion this time around)
