Poker :: Idiocy, or brilliance...?
  submitted on August 19, 2007, 7:51 PM

So, I've been continuing in my quest to stop sucking at cash games. As of now, I still suck, but I've been in the black in 5 out of my last 6 sessions, so I guess that's something to be happy about.

I ended today's session with a hand that netted me about $70, and I'm curious to know if I played the hand horribly, or if my thought process might have actually been somewhat correct.

To set the stage, the villain has been calling every single raise I make in position, and frequently re-raising me. Fairly aggressive player, seems to enjoy picking on me.

FullTiltPoker Game #3303270237: Table Bayfield (6 max) - $0.50/$1 - No Limit Hold'em - 19:00:43 ET - 2007/08/19
Seat 1: exbuddist ($201.90)
Seat 2: joshrogo ($105.50)
Seat 3: mr_beno ($69.90)
Seat 4: illes ($187.80)
Seat 5: Bud Baxter ($84.35)
Seat 6: Mike_Maloney ($73.75)
exbuddist posts the small blind of $0.50
joshrogo posts the big blind of $1
The button is in seat #6
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Mike_Maloney [9c Ks]
mr_beno folds
illes folds
Bud Baxter folds
Mike_Maloney raises to $3.50
(So for you 6-handed people out there, is this an acceptable raise? Should I just fold it? Curious to know if this is a -EV play in 6-max, still trying to learn the ropes.)
exbuddist raises to $11.50
joshrogo folds
Mike_Maloney has 15 seconds left to act
Mike_Maloney calls $8
(Like I said, he's been very aggressive towards me, so his re-raise doesn't mean a whole lot. Honestly, I put him on A-x or a low-mid pocket pair at the time, and therefore made a purely mathematical call getting 2:1 on my money.)
*** FLOP *** [5c Kd 7d]
exbuddist bets $24
(Pot-sized bet, but the way this guy plays, that's very much a continuation bet, not necessarily a value bet. I'm almost positive my TP is good here)
Mike_Maloney raises to $62.25, and is all in
exbuddist has 15 seconds left to act
exbuddist calls $38.25
(Crying call?)
Mike_Maloney shows [9c Ks]
exbuddist shows [8d 8h]
*** TURN *** [5c Kd 7d] [Kh]
*** RIVER *** [5c Kd 7d Kh] [Qc]
Mike_Maloney shows three of a kind, Kings
exbuddist shows two pair, Kings and Eights
Mike_Maloney wins the pot ($145.50) with three of a kind, Kings
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $148.50 | Rake $3
Board: [5c Kd 7d Kh Qc]
Seat 1: exbuddist (small blind) showed [8d 8h] and lost with two pair, Kings and Eights
Seat 2: joshrogo (big blind) folded before the Flop
Seat 3: mr_beno didn't bet (folded)
Seat 4: illes didn't bet (folded)
Seat 5: Bud Baxter didn't bet (folded)
Seat 6: Mike_Maloney (button) showed [9c Ks] and won ($145.50) with three of a kind, Kings

So, there you go. Like I said, I'm curious to know how I played that hand. Was my raise pre-flop stupid to begin with? Is my call pre-flop justified given my odds? Am I just a big luckbox?
